Sambucus, is from the Greek word, ‘sambuke,’ a musical instrument made of Elder wood. The stems of the plant are soft and pithy. Easily carved, they make nice whistles and flutes. Elder flowers and berries have a long history of traditional use. Hippocrates included the plant in his Materia Medica, and Shakespere penned it’s name in, “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” A popular Physician in the 1600’s (Ettmuller) describes Elder as,”The medicine chest of the country people.” The plant is easy to grow, and hardy in Zones 3-10. Each bush or tree can get up to 15 feet tall and yield 50lbs of berries!
Modern Herbalists still employ Elder readily, as it’s showing scientifically to aid against colds and flus. Elder is a mild diuretic, and the flowers are used along with lemongrass to induce a fever. Because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, Elder can ease the aches and pains associated with flu and help with arthritis. There are no contra-indications or negative side effects published or reported, Elder is safe for children, pregnant and nursing women.
